Nutter or nous? Only choice. Can try progressive-izing it away. "All symbolic and analogy, not a literal description". Thing is, there's no basis for this theology. Not when you read descriptions of manifestations and foaming mouths.

Then comes; "oh, that then, and misunderstood mental sickness".

Y'stretching it and a wee cop-out from the difficult and troubling, credibility, challenge. Going with a non-fiction reading? What's concluded?
