Roots And Culture
The name for conscious reggae is 'roots and culture' but spun here and the question; What is one and the other? Roots like a tree, where to and what for -and- culture, how does this matter, or not?
Decided to include a song or piece of music per post. Worship-ish, or at least a meditation toward and about God. Suppose could include reggae but likely not. Rasta... can be sincere and open seeking. Yet have mixed feelings, having known many adherents first-hand and lived among.
The associated music, assumed synonymous with the faith is a misunderstanding. Can be a form and vehicle for devotion but home-based rituals are with hand-held drums and chants. Same as the weed? Supposed to be for 'church' meets, not domino's and socialising.
Reggae is the only recognised-exceptional modern art form banging on about God. Circa 1974 to about 82 is the cannon. Gospel Music around the same era, might have a case but nothing so universal and hip as 'roots music'.
As for Christians among? Marley in his last days got on board (allegedly), aside from this, there was Yabby You. This Jesus dread unorthodox in placing Jesus rather than Selassie as the one. Here's Deliver Me From My Enemies.
Not what I worship with/to nowadays but have before made good in dances with sound systems.
And on Selassie there's an interesting connection and Rees Howells. A man with a ridiculous and remarkable testimony and those who gathered at his Bible College. They lived out a sign and wonders for how we need, should and I say me and MUST, aspire to go.
Understandable in its day but questionable is the Zionism and views about WW2. While careful in considering God's exceptional dealings as being normative or define theology.
In essence he demonstrated two things that jostle and spark; faith and intercession.
To roots: Outside and looking into faith in Christ. The impression endures that we 'believe' something and this 'makes us' good with God.
There's an invite and promises to confess out and experience a happening-encounter. But roots needed. And this is tree talk. In not resting in our understanding but soaking in a claimed 'living' thinking. The presence and power of one who dwells and flows in as we reach out. The words of the Bible, our 'rastaman vibration'.
Culture? To the unseen words and meanings matter but there's ambivalence about culture. In that they're perceived by the heart and intent and this transcending aesthetics. A Bach man myself but go with some of the contemporary choruses. Because like the old Mackeson ad went; "looks good, tastes good and by golly it does y'good".
Moreover claims in the Bible, songs can be a silencer to evil. While drawing into God and like speaking in unknown languages, builds up and keeps us right on.
Can be an overworked muscle leaving the limping about otherwise. With the most working aspect of collective Charismatic Christianity is the sing-a-long.
Leave here. Trying to prune the banter. Peace and sing a Psalm, make up the tune.
