Falsification is especially the fact in the case of the so-called Civil War. The name itself is a falsification. A civil war is when two sides fight for control of the government. The southern states that seceded did not fight for control of the US government. They fought because they were invaded. The northern states fought to prevent secession. Nothing in historical documents is more clearly established. Yet the War of Northern Aggression is falsified as a war to free black slaves from southern racism, despite Abe Lincoln’s many assurances to the contrary.

On the surface the issue was the tariff. The deeper problem was that the North and South had different cultures. They were really different nations. The South was agricultural. The North was industrial. The South wanted free trade. The North wanted protection from British manufactures. Northern elites wanted the South to subsidize northern industry with higher prices.

Lincoln destroyed the federal republic established by the founding fathers, and he destroyed the Constitution that protected it. He violated every provision of, and every Amendment to, the Constitution. He then rewrote, in effect, the Constitution and left the 10th Amendment out.

DiLorenzo writes that “freedom of speech was virtually nonexistent in the Northern states for the duration of the Lincoln administration.” Lincoln ordered the arrest and imprisonment of everyone who disapproved of his invasion of the South or made the slightest criticism of him. There were mass arrests of citizens and news paper editors of northern states. A minimum of 38,000 citizens of northern states were imprisoned without due process.

Graham focuses on the questions of who financed John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry, who financed the marketing of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s propagandistic novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and turned it into an international best seller, and who financed the expensive and long drawn out legal case of Dred Scott? These are honest and important questions. Graham also stresses the role played in fomenting armed strife in Kansas by Stephen Douglas’ modification or repeal of the Missouri Compromise with the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854.
